What this message means. The app fills this in automatically when a connection to the site you asked for ends unexpectedly. It reads as though our tunnel broke, but most reports of this kind turn out to be the far end — the address could not be reached at all.
Two causes account for the majority:
- The address doesn’t exist. A small typo in a domain name, or a search phrase typed into the address bar, produces exactly this error — there is no server to connect to. If a site won’t open, retype the address, or search for it instead of typing the domain.
- The site refuses our exit servers. vpn.free leaves from datacenter addresses, and several large sites block or rate-limit those ranges. Switching the server location in the app changes which address the site sees, and is worth trying.
What we fixed. Investigating this class did turn up real bugs of ours, now live for everyone. A wedged connection in the pool was being picked preferentially — it fails instantly, so it always looked like the least busy one — which turned a single failure into a storm of them. And the “give up” state never cleared until you reloaded the tab, so a phone moving from Wi-Fi to mobile data stayed broken for the rest of that page’s life. A dead connection is now skipped, and it gets one clean retry after a quiet period.
